Jonathan Vande Geest is a Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointments in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science, Ophthalmology, Computational and Systems Biology, Vascular Medicine Institute, and the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He is a Fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
Prof. Vande Geest leads the Soft Tissue Biomechanics Laboratory (STBL, www.stb-lab.com) which studies the mechanobiology of the extracellular matrix (ECM) – in particular, how the organization and mechanical response of the ECM play an integral role in human disease. The lab translates these insights into novel regenerative therapies and diagnostic strategies for these conditions. To accomplish this goal, the STBL seamlessly integrates state-of-the-art techniques in intravital nonlinear optical microscopy, artificial intelligence, tissue mechanical characterization, cell mechanobiology, biomanufacturing, and computational simulation.
