Forging The Future of Scientific Discovery

Research Mission

The Department of Computational and Systems Biology (CSB) harnesses advanced computational methods and system-level analysis to address fundamental questions in biology and biomedicine.

History

In March 2001, Ivet Bahar was recruited to create the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The Department of Computational Biology in the School of Medicine was founded in October 2004, with Bahar as the John K. Vries Chair in Computational Biology (Vries is an Emeritus Professor in Computational and Systems Biology). The department aimed to attract interdisciplinary faculty who could position the University as a leader in the growing field of computational biology. In 2009, reflecting its expanded research scope, activities and educational goals, the department was renamed as the Department of Computational and Systems Biology. Dr. Fritz Roth became the chair of the department in 2023.

Definition of Computational and Systems Biology

A new discipline at the interface between biological and computational sciences, aiming at the development and application of computational models, methods and tools to study, describe, and predict biological systems behavior, inter-relationships and time evolution, using biological data, machine learning, and basic principles of life, physical, and quantitative sciences.

Education

Our department is dedicated to providing cutting-edge research experiences and training to students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels.
