Research Summary

Dr. Mo Ebrahimkhani is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, where he leads the Laboratory for Synthetic Morphogenetics and Tissue Ecology. He completed his postdoctoral training in Biological Engineering at MIT. His laboratory develops and integrates human stem cell–based models of embryogenesis and organoids with systems and synthetic biology approaches. This work aims to unravel the principles governing human development and organ formation, with a particular focus on early post-implantation events, hematopoietic niches, and liver development. In parallel, his lab engineers technologies to guide, control, and decode morphogenesis, with the goal of advancing regenerative and rejuvenative therapies. Dr. Ebrahimkhani has received multiple research awards, including the Mayo Clinic Accelerated Regenerative Medicine Award, the EASL Sheila Sherlock Fellowship Award, the NSF ReCode Program Award, multiple NIH R01 grants, the University of Pittsburgh 2024 Ascending Star Award, and the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation Initiative Award. Mo is also a co-founder of several startups focused on rejuvenation, programmable organoids, and gene therapies.
